Fifty years ago, MIT’s Sloan School of Management (Sloan Full-Time MBA Profile) made its first foray into business education in India when it helped start the Indian Institute of Management in Calcutta. Since then, while Sloan has collaborated with B-schools around the world, it hasn’t had an Indian partner.

“India was a gaping hole that existed in our strategy,” says Sloan Deputy Dean S.P. Kothari. But all that is about to change.

NEW DELHI: Which sector could be the largest print advertiser in India? It’s neither food and beverages that includes big brands such as Coke and Pepsi. Nor is it FMCG which has HUL as country’s largest advertiser. It’s not even telecom. It's education.

In fact, during the first six months of 2009 and 2010, the education sector topped the chart in print advertising by pipping traditionally-heavy advertising sectors such as food and beverage, telecom and auto, according to TAM data.

VADODARA: Aspiring urologists in the country will now get a global advantage with American Urological Association (AUA) helping Urological Society of India (USI) to set up an education cell. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday said India has a 'long way to go' in spreading literacy, adding that paucity of funds will not be allowed to hamper the spread of education in the country.

'We still have a very long way to go (in spreading education),' Manmohan Singh said, referring to 'significant gains' India has made in the field.

'According to UNESCO's Global Monitoring Report 2006, out of 771 million illiterates in the world, 268 million are estimated to be residing in our country, which accounts for nearly one-third of the world's non-literates,' he said.

A year or two ago, I received this e-mail. The writer was upset with me for arguing that school principals should have the power to fire teachers who do not perform. As numerous educators have told me, union protections being what they are, dumping a teacher — even a bad one — is an almost impossible task.

My correspondent, a teacher, took issue with my desire to see that changed, noting that without those protections, she'd be at the mercy of some boss who decided one day to fire her.

New Delhi : The Army on Monday agreed to grant permanent commission to serving women officers in two branches, Judge Advocate General and Army Education Corps, following which the Supreme Court stayed “contempt proceedings” against the Army chief.
