India's upper house passes bill reserving a third of legislative seats for women

NEW DELHI -- Indian lawmakers approved a historic bill Tuesday that would set aside one-third of all legislative seats for women, a move aimed at overturning six decades of male-dominated decision-making in this country.

The bill, which drew fierce opposition before its passage in the upper house of parliament, would guarantee seats for women in the national legislature and all state assemblies in the world's largest democracy, where women have been largely kept on the sidelines of the legislative process.

Indian government offers scholarships for undergraduate courses

KUALA LUMPUR: The Indian government is giving out scholarships to children of Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) for undergraduate professio­nal and general courses in India during the 2010-11 academic year.

The undergraduate courses include engineering, architecture, technology, humanities, liberal arts, commerce, management (business administration and business management), journalism, hotel management, agriculture/ animal husbandry, sciences and law.

There are no scholarships for medical and related courses.

BCI: Keep law out of Higher Education Commission Bill

The Bar Council of India is against the Centre's move to introduce the National Commission of Higher Education and Research Bill, on the ground that it proposes to take away the BCI's powers in legal education.

The BCI, at its emergency meeting here on Sunday, unanimously decided to oppose tooth and nail the “adventurist and highly condemnable” proposals in the Bill and urged the government to drop it.

MCI plans new body to improve medical education

Ahemadabad : In a bid to spruce up medical education in India, the Medical Council of India plans to create an apical body. The proposed body is likely to absorb best teachers and run virtual classroom orientation courses for teachers. In addition, students and teachers in all medical institutions will now be able to punch in their attendance using the biometric system with smart cards.

“The biometric system will be installed in all the 300 medical colleges across India within two months,” said MCI president Ketan Desai.
