Dr.B.R.Ambedkar Medical College has been established in the year 1981 by Ananda Social and Education Trust,with the objective of providing Primary, Secondary and Tertiary health care facilities to the deserving. The institution also envisages provision of quality medical education both for Undergraduates and Post graduates.
It also has facilities for cultural and sports activities for students fulfilling the need for extra curricular activities.
The curriculum followed, is as per the guidelines of the Medical Council of India and Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, which awards the various degrees & diplomas.
The Ananda Social and Educational Trust was set up as the outcome of a dream of committed Scheduled Caste persons to make a positive contribution for the betterment of SC and ST people, by opening up new avenues for them to find better slots in the social hierarchy. To this end a Medical college named after Bharatha Rathna Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was established in 1981 under the aegis of Ananda Social and Educational Trust by 9 founder Trustees
The odds the visionary team had to contend with were many, but the co-operation and encouragement received from several quarters made the dream project a reality. The Government of Karnataka under the stewardship of Sri.R.Gundu Rao accorded sanction to the Ananda Trust to start a medical college on 6th July 1981 at Cooke Town. Subsequently, the Karnataka Government and Sri.B.Basavalingappa extended generous help with the allotment of 25 acres of land at Kadugondanahalli, at virtually no cost, to build its own campus. The Trust, which also runs a Dental College, a School of Nursing, a college of Physiotherapy as well as institutes of Medical Laboratory Technology and Radiography, has rich experience in the field of education. Its motto is to serve the weaker sections of the community, handicapped socially, educationally & economically.
May 1987, the college moved to its own campus at Kadugondanahalli. The elegant and imposing college building with its beautiful architectural design attracts the attention of all visitors. It is well planned and accommodates the Administrative block, Trust office, Ananda Co-operative Bank-Extn. Counter, Central Library, Pre-Clinical and Para-Clinical departments and a modern OPD Block. The hospital with 560 beds is also situated on the campus. The college was initially affiliated to the Bangalore University and is now affiliated with the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. The college runs the MBBS course as well as post-graduate courses in many subjects that are recognized by the Medical Council of India (vide MCI Order MCI/50(4)/91-Med./19649 dt. 22/11/1991). The intake of MBBS students per academic year is 100 and the present student strength of the college is 563, out of which 10% belong to SC/ST. Also on campus are the School of Nursing, Physiotherapy Block which houses the Institute of Physiotherapy, and the Gents and Ladies Hostels.
A well stocked, state of the art central library provides a superb knowledge database to cater to Undergraduates, Post-graduates, PhD students as well as the staff. The well trained and dedicated library staff understand the needs of the students and guide them in accessing the literature they need.
