The Centre was established in 1977 by the Department of Science and Technology initially under the Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC) programme, with Indian Institute of Science, Raman Research Institute, National Aeronautical Laboratory all in Bangalore and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Bombay as the participating institutions, and was called "Bangalore NMR Facility" . It came under the purview of Regional Sophisticated Instrumentation Centre(RSIC) programme in April 1982 and was called the "Sophisticated Instruments Facility". In March 2005, it was renamed as "NMR Research Centre", which reflects the current activities.
