Carmel College of Arts, Science and Commerce for Women was the first college in Goa to start Biotechnology. The main objective in introducing this course is to prepare students for jobs after graduation. The course was initially funded by the UGC for a period of 5 years and is continuing as self financed.On-the-job training is an essential component of the course during which students gain hands on experience in various biotechnologically relevant fields particularly in institutes of national repute, research laboratories, training centres, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, distilleries, bakeries etc. under the supervision of qualified personnel.Sufficient infrastructure has been created over the years for the smooth conduct of the course. Oyster mushroom cultivation is taken up on a regular basis in the department and students are trained in the same. Spawn for oyster mushroom is also developed in the tissue culture laboratory which is later distributed to students interested in cultivating mushrooms at home.
