Department of Aerospace Engineering, IIT Kanpur- A premier teaching and research centre today, engaged in engineering science instruction, in-flight laboratory work, aerodynamic testing, and indigenous design and fabrication of advanced facilities and instruments. This department was inagurated in 1964. The department specializes in aerodynamics, flight mechanics, propulsion, and aerospace structures. It has a unique flight laboratory with three powered aircrafts, four gliders and a 1000 m runway. All other academic institutions in the country make use of this facility.
Defence Agricultural Research Laboratory (DLS)- The agricultural research in DRDO had its beginning with the establishment of a laboratory in Leh with a technical cell at Almora in April 1961, under the aegis of Indian Council of Agricultural Research. This cell was later transferred to DRDO in 1962 as Agricultural Research Unit (ARU). Field stations were opened in the remote border areas of Auli (3142 m) Pithoragarh (1524 m) and Hawalbagh (1060 m) with headquarters at Almora (1530 m). A transit base was established at Haldwani (333m) to provide logistic support for undertaking research work in difficult areas.
