Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya Institute for the Physically Handicapped is an autonomous organisation under the administrative and financial control of Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India. This institute came into being when the erstwhile Jawahar Lal Nehru Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and other allied institution run by the council for the Aid of crippled & handicapped were taken over by the Govt. of India on 22nd May 1975 and converted into an autonomous body in the year 1976.

The Institute aims to serve the physically disabled of all age groups. In this pursuit of alleviating the suffering of disabled people, the Institute runs following programme :-

Bachelor of Physical Therapy, Bachelor of Occupational Therapy and Bachelor of Prosthetics & Orthotics, 4 ½ years duration course in affiliation with University of Delhi.

Out patient clinical services in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy.

Workshop for the fabrication of Orthotic and Prosthetic appliances including calipers, splints, artificial limbs, surgical boots and customized wooden furniture for the persons with different types of locomotor impairments.

Conduct out-reach camps for the economically weaker disabled persons, living in the far-flung and remote areas, with the help of concerned district administration and locally active non-governmental organizations.

Extend institutional comprehensive rehabilitation services to persons with disabilities by establishing & operationalizing of Southern Regional Rehabilitation Centre (SRC), Secunderabad (AP), District Disability Rehabilitation Centres (DDRCs) and facilitating the establishment of Regional Spinal Injury Centre.

Integrated School for orthopaedically disabled children up-to Vth standard approved by Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Provide Social, Psychological and Vocational Counseling Services to the persons with disabilities.

Printing Press to cater to the printing needs of the Institute and Ministry for dissemination of information and generation of awareness.

Aims and Objectives

The main aims and objectives of the Institute are as follows:-

Human Resource Development
To undertake the training of Physio- therapists, Occupational Therapists and such other personnel needed for manning services for the disabled persons.

Rehabilitation Services
To offer education, training, work-adjustment and such other rehabilitation services as the society may deem fit to orthopaedically disabled persons with associated mental retardation.
To undertake the manufacturing and distribution of such aids and appliances as are needed for the education, training and rehabilitation of the disabled persons.
To provide such other services as may be considered appropriate for promoting the education and rehabilitation of the disabled persons, including organising meetings, seminars and symposia.

Bachelors Degree Courses

Bachelor of Prosthetics & Orthodontics (BPO)

To achieve one of the main objectives of the Institute i.e., human resource development in the field of rehabilitation, the Institute is conducting following long term courses:-

1. Bachelor of Physical Therapy, Bachelor of Occupational Therapy and Bachelor of Prosthetics & Orthotics of 4½ years duration each affiliated to the University of Delhi.
2. Bridge course of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy of one year duration each to upgrade and equalize passed out students of Bsc (Hons.) PT/OT of 3½ years duration to 4½ years duration course.
3. The Institute has also been identified by RCI to conduct one year duration Bridge course to up grade Diploma holders to Degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics in affiliation with JR University,

Mode of Admission

The candidates are admitted to the Bachelor of Physical Therapy/Bachelor of Occupational Therapy/Bachelor of Prosthetics & Orthotics through an entrance test conducted every year in the month of June/July by University of Delhi. The Institute used videography techniques to identify the malpractice users and impersonators in the entrance test so as to ensure fair selection of deserving candidates. Students are admitted category wise as per the merit list prepared by University of Delhi. The selection of candidates for admission to BPT/BOT/BPO is made on the basis of merit in the Entrance Test conducted by University of Delhi. It consists of objective type of questions based on Senior Secondary School Certificate (10+2) curriculum.

The candidates opting for BPO course have the option to attempt questions either in Biology or Mathematics depending upon their subjects in qualifying examination (i.e. 10 + 2). All Indian candidates seeking admission to the courses of BPT, BOT and BPO run by the Institute will have to appear in the Entrance Test.
