Department of Chemistry
P.C.Jabin Science College , Hubli has been established as a single faculty Science Institution in 1957 by Karnataka Lingayat Education Society, Belgaum . Chemistry as one of the major and minor subjects has been introduced in the same year.
Since the inception of chemistry department and chemistry as one of the optional subjects, the department is showing exponential progress rate. At present there are three well equipped laboratories with capacity of 60 students in each. There is a newly established research laboratory having highly sophisticated modern equipments like U.V/Vivisible spectroscopy, digital balances, digital melting point/boiling point apparatus, rotary vaccum evaporators, T.L.C etc. useful for the students and staff continuing the research work.
During this academic year are there 290 students studying in B.Sc I/III/V semester classes with chemistry as one of the optional subjects. There are eight experiences and devoted faculty members with four Ph.D holders and some staff members have registered for Ph.D degree recently.
Department is involved in the extension research work. Our faculty, Dr. B.N.Vasudevnaik guided five students for their M.Phil. degree.
The department has started C.O.P namely the certificate course in Hospital Waste Disposal Management, with U.G.C assistance.
The department conducts Annual Industrial/Study tours for students to various important industries to get first hand information of projects. The department of chemistry organizes various seminars/ work-shops every year for the benefit of students and staff members. During 2008-09 a state level work-shop on Microscale experimentation in Chemistry for College Teacher's was organized in the college, on 7 th March 2009. About 75 delegated participated, emphasising the economical use of chemicals & pollution control.
The members of staff have published many research papers in National/International journals and have attended various National/International Seminars/Workshops.
A Research paper entilled “Synthesis Spectroscopic and thermal studies of some bivalent transition metal complexes with the hydrazones” authored by Dr. M.I.Sambrani and co-workers, Dr. V.M.Naik and Dr. N.B.Mallur, was published in Indian Journal of chemistry vol. 47. A December 2008.
