Established in 1976 as the Department of Foreign Languages, the centre was involved in the teaching of languages like French, German and Russian. Later courses in Italian and Japanese were also introduced. All these courses were restricted to certificate and diploma levels. In order to meet the contemprorary challenges, M.A.(Translation) German / Russian and Ph.D in comparative literature were started. The Department also conducts need based short term programmes in these Foreign Languages. Translation services in various types of documents are also offered. The department also conducts regular short term programmes in Communicative English of three months duration. A one year Post Graduate Diploma in Communicative English is also offered for professionals in various fields. National Seminar sponsored by UGC, Workshops and Translation camps are conducted annually. Subsequently in May 2003 the Department was reoriented as the Department of Culture and Heritage for a holistic study of languages, both Indian and Foreign realizing them as a living heritage of humanity, giving equal importance to culture and linguistic aspects.
