Sri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Technology & Science (formerly Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Management) was established in 1994 at Dehradun by Shri Guru Ram Rai Education Mission with the financial support of its parent body-Darbar Shri Guru Ram Rai Ji Maharaj, which is over 350 years old religious and philanthropic organization.

The IMS Philosophy Institute of Management Studies (IMS) is a leading Institute with a clearly defined approach to creating quality managers and entrepreneurs required to face the challenges of the corporate sector with its BBA, BCA and post graduate MBA and MIT courses. The Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), one of the constituent laboratories of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), located in beautiful valley of Dehradun in outer Himalaya started functioning temporarily at Delhi in September 1960 and shifted to Dehra Dun during 1963. In establishing the Institute, initial help was provided by the French Institute of Petroleum (IFP).

To keep pace with the developments in electrical sciences, the Department of Electrical Engineering decided in 1977 to impart knowledge in two broad specialities which were initially termed as high current and low Current streams. In the view of compulsions of available infrastructure and expertise with the department and fast rate of advancement in the low current area, the need of having a seperate department was soon realized.The process of creation of a new department was started which ultimately resulted in establishment of Deaprtment of Electronics Engineering in February 1988.
