Jorhat Engineering College was established in 1960 at Jorhat, Assam, by the state government of Assam. Jorhat is a town of Upper Assam and it is situated around 300km east of Guwahati, the capital city of Assam. Jorhat is connected to rest of the country by bus, railway and air traffic. Initially the college was started with three different discipline, namely, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Currently, two more courses has been introduced, one for Computer Science and Engineering and the other one is Instrumentation Engineering. In all these decipline, four year B.E. degree course is conducted. It also has a post graduate course in Computer Application.
Jorhat Engineering College, the premier institution of the North East India and the second Government Engineering College of Assam is about to complete its fifty years of relentless service to the society. The College came into existence on 7th January, 1959 at H.R.H.P.O.W. Institute of Engineering & Technology, Jorhat with the then Principal of the Institute, Sri H.N. Barua also as the Principal in-charge of Jorhat Engineering College. The College started functioning with admission of its first batch of students in Civil Engineering, on 10th October, 1960. With a glorious journey, the College currently offers AICTE recongnised B.E. courses in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science & Engineering and Instrumentation Engineering. While the College has been offering three-year post graduate course leading to Master of Computer Application (M.C.A.) since 1987, AICTE approval has been received for offering M.E. course in Mechanical Engineering.
Jorhat Engineering College was set up with an intention of providing an efficient system of education and to cater to the needs of technical manpower in the North-Eastern region of the country. The college now offers four year under graduate courses in five disciplines, viz. Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering and Mechanical Engineering , one three year post graduate course in Computer Application leading to The Master of Computer Application (M.C.A.) degree, and a post graduate degree in Production Engineering under the Mechanical Engineering Department from the session July 2004 . Each department of the college has the well equipped laboratory. The well organized Workshop of the college provides exhaustive hands-on-training to the students. The college maintains a good relationship with the leading Industrial Organizations of the region by extending consultancy services and through industry-institute interaction programs.
