Department of Entomology
With the inception of Agriculture Department in the Annamalai University a small but compact unit of Entomology came into existence as part of the Department of Agriculture mainly to cater to the instructional needs of B.Sc. (Ag.,) degree. Notably persons like Dr. N. P. Kalyanam, who later became Professor of Zoology in Pachaiyappa’s College, Madras, nurtured the unit with dedication. The Section of Entomology in 1959 was staffed with young teachers like Mr. Chidambaranathan, and Dr.M.Balasubramanian whose dedication to the subject was an inspiration to students of Agriculture.

The Department of Education is a beehive of academic activities from its inception in 1953. The building of the Department of Education was inaugurated by the eminent Philosopher and Former President of India Dr.S.Radhakrishnan on 26th December 1955. Department of Engineering Chemistry
Engineering Chemistry section was established in the year 1965 under the headship of Prof. P.L. Ramasamy and then it was shifted to science block building in 1976, with five faculty members and 32 seating capacity M.Phil in Engineering Chemistry was introduced in the year 1980 and a very good research lab was established in 1982 with sophisticated instruments. Many students got M.Phil and Ph.D degrees from our section. M.Phil in Applied Chemistry has been started in 1990and more than 20 students got benefited out of it.

There are twenty six teaching staff and twenty one non teaching staff members in our physics section. Among the teaching staff, sixteen members have got Ph.D. and remaining staff members are doing Ph.D. Programme. Twenty three Ph.D., and four M.Phil. students are doing research program under the guidance. There is one U.G.C project of Rs.7,08,000 is going on under the supervision of Dr.N.Sundaraganesan. We are having good laboratory for students and also for researches.

Engineering English section was established in the year 1965 with five faculty members The Department carved a nitch by dedicated work extended by the enlightened faculty to mould the communicative skills of the outgoing Engineers. A Well – equipped Modern Language Lab was established in the year 2007, to cater to the language needs of both the teacher and the taught. Department of Marine Sciences
The Department of Earth Sciences is offering two PG courses related to Earth Science and two Diploma courses; One on Petroleum Exploration and another on Remote Sensing. The Department has attained DST-FIST (60.00 lakhs) status. 14 students were awarded Ph.D. degree and 43 students were awarded M.Phil. degree. Nearly 117 research articles were published in world class journals. The Alumni of this Department is working in ONGC, NLC, ISRO, Indian Remote Sensing Organization and in various mines. The Department has mobilized research grant of Rs. 6 crores from various funding agencies.

Department of Philosophy
Great academics and a Vice-Chancellors embellished the Department of Philosophy, and its academic tradition grows into the future with the teachers earnest efforts. Four new M.A., programs have been introduced in the department in the recent years, and research progresses parallel to teaching, and the fact that five researchers have earned Ph.Ds and 7 their M.Phils stands testimony to the academic verve of the teaching staff. The department has undertaken one research project worth Rs.50,000/-. The department has organized 4 national and 2 international seminars and conferences.

Department of Library and Information Science
Dissemination of Knowledge is one of the important features of inculcation and the Department of Library and Information Science makes its best endeavours in this direction. The department have been offering BLIS (one year) , MLIS (Two year) and MLIS (Five Year integrated) programmes. In the last five years the faculty has earned 2 projects worth thirty three lakhs of rupees. Fifty eight researchers have successfully completed their Ph.D. programs and 44 their M.Phil Programmes. The department has carved a riche conducting five national seminars.

Department of Business Administration
The Department of Business Administration is the largest component of the Faculty of arts which thrives everyday in its academic and research endeavours to inculcate in the prospective entrepreneurs the ideas of business management. Four M.B.A., programs of multeity have been introduced in the department to meet the growing demands of young learners for appropriate placement. The faculty have received encomia from different quarters of the academic world for earning 9 projects worth 23 lakhs of rupees. The department has executed 6 consultancy projects worth 11 lakhs of rupees.

Department of Population Studies
The Department of Population Studies functions in consonance with the national poliy of the Government of India, and the progress the department has made is commendable. To meet the growing demand for new innovative programs from the students, both Indian and international, seven academic courses have been introduced in the department viz. tow M.A. programs, one B.A., program, one P.G.Diploma and three diploma programs. Five Projects worth 12.2 lakhs and seventeen thousand rupees have been undertaken, and the Project Directors are making consistent progress.

Department of Commerce
The Department of Commerce is one of the biggest departments on campus, and the programs offered are the most sought after. Nine new M.Com., programs have been offered in the last two score years in addition to three diploma programs. Since 2007, fifty two researchers have earned their Ph.D degrees, 109 researchers have got their M.Phil degrees. Two MoUs have been signed with Insys Info School and ICICI respectively to facilitate academic advancement and placement for the students. The department has published 42 books and 4762 research papers in national and international journals.

Department of Sociology
Dr.S.Saraswathy, the present Head of the Department of Sociology, assumed office in 1998. The Department has six Professors and nine Assistant Professors who have specialized in a wide range of research areas. The programmes offered by the department are M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D in Sociology. A Five-Year Integrated programme in M.A., Applied Sociology and M.S.W Programme were introduced in 2002 and 2008 respectively.

Department of Economics
The Department of Economics supported by the UGC under SAP-DRS-1 has made long strides in imparting niceties of knowledge to students, and in the last five years two innovative programs, M.A., Applied Economics, and M.B.A., Environmental Management, are the proud additions in teaching. During 2007-2012 11 research projects have been undertaken at an estimate cost of Rs.76.50 lakhs. Effective research is done in the department, and 74 M.Phils and 50 Ph.Ds have been produced by the department so far.

The Department came into being in the year 1981 consequent on the bifurcation of the till then composite Department of History and Politics. The goal, initially, was to strengthen the discipline by seeking to increase the number of Colleges/University Departments, which could take up teaching and research in Political Science.

Department of History
The Department of History has made long strides since its inception, and in the last two decades, it has been conspicuous for its teaching and research achievements. Two notable programs, M.A. in History and Heritage Managements (five year integrated), and M.A., in Ancient History and Archeology, have been introduced in the department, and are well-received. During 2007-2012, twenty two researchers have earned their Ph.D degrees, 76 researchers have got their M.Phil degrees and the same research pursuit continues in the department.

The Department of English in the Faculty of Arts is one of the major departments fulfilling the requisites of universities and colleges elsewhere that students should learn a minimum of one European language in addition to the vernacular, and indeed, the department includes teaching French to the students in addition to English.
