Department of Horticulture

 

Circumfusion of rural scenario and Agriculture around the University premises has been taken advantage to establish a Department of Agriculture in the Faculty of Science during 1951 due to idealized perception former founder Pro-Chancellor, Dr.Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar and due to the interest of Dr.S.K.Manavala Ramanujam, the then Vice-Chancellor. A renowned Horticulturist of International repute, Dr.S.Krishnamoorthy was the first Head of the Department of Agriculture. He has played a significant role in starting a M.Sc. (Ag.) Programme in Horticulture as early as in 1959, being the first of its kind in India . The post-graduate unit has done pioneering work on the practical application of plant growth regulators in producing seedless brinjal. With further expansion, the erstwhile Division of Horticulture functioning from 1958-59 onwards was upgraded as a Department in 1991 with the commencement of a full fledged post graduate programme in Horticulture.
